Hygienic Design – Drainability and riboflavin test of vessels and filter housings

In very hygiene-critical applications such as in the healthcare or food & beverage industry, drainability is of great importance.(gravity drainage). We are happy to support you with a suitable design, for example with special fittings, surfaces with a slope and a roughness of up to Ra ≤ 0.38 µm. We will discuss your test protocol for the drainability of the housing or vessel at the start of your project and consider the current ASME BPE guidelines. We can document the drainability for your end customer with a video we create.

All surfaces that come into contact with the product must either be easily accessible for manual cleaning or it must be demonstrated that automated cleaning in place (clean-in-place CIP) produces compliant results. So-called dead spaces, i.e. areas that are not wetted by the cleaning medium (spray shadows), are particularly feared. CIP lances are often used in containers and filter housings. We are happy to offer you CIP lances with customised spray balls adapted to your application.

To verify the wettability of surfaces in contact with the product, we offer you the so-called riboflavin test. In this test, riboflavin (a fluorescent vitamin) is applied to the product-wetted area, after which a CIP rinse (modelled on reality) is carried out. An UV lamp is then used to check whether fluorescent riboflavin is still present on the surfaces in the filter housing/ vessel. Your advantage with Sommer & Strassburger is our decades of experience in the design, manufacture and documentation of pharmaceutical filter housings and vessels!

Contact us, we can also make your system completely drainable!

Export of pressure vessels according to JIS (Japanese industrial standard)

The Japanese Industrial Standards define the standards that are used in industry in Japan. The design of pressure equipment according to JIS is based on ASME, but there are some special requirements for the selection of materials and parts. For example, sight glasses and screws must undergo a separate component test in accordance with Japanese national regulations. Although TÜV Rheinland Industrie Service GmbH, for example, is usually used as the designated foreign testing agency (DFTA) for a tank manufactured in Germany, it is up to the Japanese authority to determine the scope of testing in Japan. As a rule, a document check and a visual inspection including a dimensional check are carried out on site in Japan. We have already successfully completed several projects with export to Japan, for example a vessel with manufacturing/calculation basis according to ASME Section VIII Div.1 / Edition 2021 (Joint Efficiency E=0.7) with classification according to JIS B8265:2017: Second class pressure Vessel.
Get in touch with us, we will get your export to Japan off the ground – and not just during the cherry blossom season!

Pressure equipment registration for South Korea

This year we also have a project in which we are building tanks and equipment that will be located in South Korea near Seoul. As the tanks fall under the category of pressure equipment – we need certification from KEA (KOREA ENERGY AGENCY). The KEA is a Korean authority which have their own guidelines for pressure equipment.. The advantage of our many years of experience is that we know the very high standards and, when it comes down to it, we work closely with the Korean engineering office SSEN to achieve the best possible cooperation.

Contact us if you want to export to South Korea – we will be happy to advise you.

Sommer and Strassburger at the AQUATECH trade fair in Amsterdam from 06-09 November 2023.

The AQUATECH trade fair in Amsterdam is a trade fair for process, drinking and waste water. Sommer und Strassburger is one of more than 550 exhibitors.  Around 20,000 participants inform themselves about drinking water, industrial wastewater and sewage treatment, water transport, utilities and much more. Stainless steel is the material of choice in many areas of water treatment. Our stainless steel systems and components can be used for many different applications: pharmaceutical water, dialysis water, brewing water or water for mixing beverages – wherever quality makes the difference.

Our sales team is at your disposal and is looking forward to sharing this year’s innovations with you. Contact us if you would like a personal appointment or a free day ticket.

We would love to welcome you at our stand in hall 1 at stand 01.505.

Gas filter housing – lower part completely CNC-manufactured

Gas is often used in the production of food, pharmaceutical products, and medicines. For example, purified air is utilised in many fermentation processes. If impurities enter the process via the air – the entire batch can be contaminated and must be discarded.

Our gas filter housings play a major role in safe process control. New in 2023 is that the lower part of the housing is made entirely of solid material using CNC technology, thus saving around 50% of the welding seams. Weld seams should always be kept to a minimum in hygienic/aseptic process control, as contamination by germs can occur there due to the slightly rougher surface. Another advantage of reducing the number of weld seams is that we can now offer even more attractive prices.

We offer our gas filter housings with inner surfaces from bright metal to SF4 (Ra ≤ 0.38 µm and electropolished). We can manufacture the gas housing in the outlet with a slope to achieve good residual drainability according to ASME BPE.

The new series is available in 16 standard versions from DN10 to DN40 in DIN as well as in ISO and inch versions – due to the modular system we can guarantee short delivery times. Of course, we weld the connections orbitally as standard – because we are concerned about the highest process reliability and reproducibility.

Thought through for you: To avoid condensation in the “cold” stainless steel housing and thus prevent blocking of the filter cartridge, we are pleased to offer you our automatic heating.

Our filter housings are designed and calculated according to AD2000 as standard, other regulations on request. We would also be happy to provide you with detailed documentation including endoscopy and non-destructive testing (NDT) of the weld seams.

Sommer und Strassburger has been producing stainless steel components for many industries for almost 50 years. Our sales experts work closely with our design and production department, so that we can always offer you innovative improvements.

Ask us, we will find the safe solution for your process too!
